A Christian Hypocrite?

Dear Christians in the industry:

uptown_pharrell_williams_kim_burrellLet this be a lesson to you. You cannot mix light with darkness. You cannot mix the holy with the profane. You cannot be friends with the world and friends with God. The world is going to reject you if you’re WITH God, and God is going to reject you if you’re friends WITH the world.

Choose you this day whom ye will serve. Joshua 24:15

pharell-on-ellenKim Burrell, a well known Christian gospel singer, was scheduled to perform on the Ellen Degeneres Show with Pharrell Williams on January 5th 2017. Pharrel is a worldly rapper known for his major support of the LGBT community. Kim Burrell was also scheduled to perform at the BMI Gospel Music Awards January 14th 2017. BMI is not at all a Christian organization. They are of the world and friends with the world, not God. After a sermon that Kim preached surfaced on social media highlighting her saying “the perverted spirit of homosexuality,”  all of a sudden everything gets cancelled. Even her radio show “Bridging The Gap with Kim Burrell” on KTSU Radio Programming has been cancelled. Bottom line, she got booted for speaking against sin.

trailblazers2017Many Christians are applauding her for her bravery, but my question is this: why accept an invitation to the Ellen Degeneres Show in the first place, when you know your stance against sin and homosexuality? To get your name out there? To get a nice paycheck? Are you friends with the world? We can’t play both sides of the fence.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the ENEMY of God.

I don’t know about you, but I never want be God’s enemy. We Christians in the music industry have to be salt and light – and we must refuse to compromise with the world. Period. We represent Christ FIRST, and then we are a musician. That goes for any industry. Whatever you are in – sports, film, skateboarding, graphic design, medical, cosmetology, music, spoken word, choreography- first you are an ambassador of Jesus Christ. Everything else is secondary. Unless you use the opportunity to preach the gospel and call out sin, then there’s no reason to accept an invitation to an ungodly event – no matter how awesome the event is. Check your motives. Is this to bring glory to God or to your own name? Don’t allow pride to get in the way and don’t let others talk you into things that are against God’s word. God will hold you accountable my friend.

If you know my story, then you know I was deep in the music industry recently. A few years ago I was advised by my manager, at the time, to perform at one of biggest LGBT parades in California. The goal was to gain Lady Rho fans in the LGBT community. Knowing that I stood against sin – ALL sin, not just homosexuality – I had to decline the offer. It would have been hypocritical of me to say “I’m a Christian and I’m against sin,” but then turn around and accept money, praise and fans from the LGBT community. That’s not right. And in my honest opinion, Kim Burrell did just that. She spoke out against sin and preached a sermon from a “Christian” viewpoint, but then turned around and accepted the invitation to perform on the Ellen Degeneres Show – Hollywood’s most prominent lesbian. Does that make sense? Kim is a hypocrite. And God is pulling her card. “Kim you want to be a Christian and you want to be friends with the world? Let’s see how you handle getting cancelled…”

Brethren, we are IN the world, not of it. Called OUT of the world, not friends with it. I pray you are not a hypocrite. Look what Jesus says in the book of Mark:

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you HYPOCRITES, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

With love,

Your sister in Christ
